Insights from the Panama Canal Authority Roundtable:
Digitalization and Infrastructure Enhancements.
During the Maritime and Logistics trade mission, a roundtable discussion took place with the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). Representatives from Dutch companies met with Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vasquez to explore future projects and challenges.
Mr. Vasquez emphasized the Authority's efforts to engage with cargo owners to better understand market demands. This led to a revision of the ACP's reservations system for transit slots.
Digitalization remains a top priority for the ACP, creating opportunities for Dutch companies. For example, the ACP has launched a digital platform to collect data, most of which is publicly accessible on the Panama Canal website and aims to improve transit efficiency.
Another opportunity on the horizon is a tender for a new control center. The current facility will need to be replaced due to the construction of a fourth bridge over the canal. This tender is anticipated to be released in early November 2024. The new center will manage real-time information for ACP pilots and tugboats, among other functions.
Additionally, a tender for a new road on the west side of the canal is expected around July 2025, aimed at enhancing cargo flow between the Atlantic and Pacific.
With the completion of Metro Line 3, a water bus connection is being considered to link both sides of the canal, and the ACP is looking into replacing locomotives at the Miraflores locks with side-thrusters.
These and other developments present significant opportunities for collaboration and innovation between Dutch companies and the Panama Canal Authority, paving the way for enhanced efficiency and connectivity in maritime logistics.
